In the past, a 40 hour work week was the standard. People would generally work from 9-5 Monday to Friday, and then have their evenings and weekends off. However, over the years, something shifted. Now, it is almost normal for people to work well over 40 hours a week, week in and week out.

While many are capable of doing this for a little while, if you start to do it more often, it could have some very dire consequences. This article will look at a couple different ways that our culture of working long hours nearly very week is terrible for us, especially if we do it for a long time.

Working Long Hours Overworks Us

This one is obvious. Any way you look at it, people aren’t designed to work for 80 hours a week. Our bodies and minds need some rest from time to time and if not, the body can begin to shut down. Our eyes get tired, our mind goes blank and our bodies can get sore.

Not only that, but most workers are much less productive and more tired when they work those long hours, so the employer is actually often getting less benefit out of these extra hours. Working long can make us irritable, can severely affect productivity and can even make some people grow to dislike their job, which is never a good thing.

It Messes Up Our Sleeping Schedule

Sleep is one of the most important things for our overall health, but is something that many people are quick to sacrifice. So when we have an extremely long work week, we often don’t get much sleep. For example, if you work a 12 hour day, have a 1 hour commute each way, that only gives you 10 hours of time for you to eat, sleep, shower, and have a social life.

Also, once you mess up a sleep schedule or don’t get enough for a long period of time, it can be tough to get it back on track. And not getting enough rest can lead to workers being much less productive, more sluggish and can generally affect their performance in a hugely negative way.

We Miss Out on Our Social Lives

Humans, by design, are social creatures. We like spending time with others and doing activities that we enjoy. That could be anything from hanging out with your children in the living room, to going to go play flag football with your friends. Unfortunately, working long hours every day and severely impact the amount of time we have to spend with friends.

Sure, we get to speak with our coworkers and such, but there isn’t a lot of time for friends and family if you are working long hours each and every day. This can put a serious strain on friendships, relationships and more.

People Are Actually Dying From Being Overworked

Not only is this overworking hurting our sleeping schedule, our performance and our social lives, but it can also quite literally kill us. There have been numerous reports from all over the world of people dying from working too much.

Also, working abnormally long hours has been tied to a wide range of ailments and conditions such as strokes, heart attacks, suicides and more. Simply put, working extremely long hours in demanding positions for too long, and there is a huge risk your health will take a hit in some way, shape or form.

In conclusion, while working long hours is necessary from time to time, there are many ways that it is hurting us physically, socially and emotionally, so it should be kept to a minimum if possible. As a result, you should ensure that hours are properly taken and kept track of, and that no one is working so much that it negatively affects their lives in a huge way.

While some companies rely on paper scheduling, there are tools out there (such as https://www.humanity.com/employee-schedule-maker) that can make scheduling much easier and more efficient.
