If you want to improve your life and/or job performance, chances are that you are going to need a lot of self-motivation and self-leadership in order to improve on your own. If there is something that you want to do, it is highly unlikely that anyone can motivate you as well as you can motivate yourself. Even if you are not a leader of other people, becoming the leader of yourself is a vital part of becoming a successful person, and not just in the short-term, but in the long-term, too.

Leading yourself is not that different from leading others. Like motivating others, in order to motivate yourself, you have to figure out what things trigger your productivity, even in situations where you really do not want to complete a task or job. When leading others, you have to find what motivates them (basically, is it the carrot in front of them or the stick behind?). In order to become effective leaders of ourselves, you have to find what causes you to work harder and longer—the carrot or the stick? And you also have to discover how to trigger that motivation, especially if no one else will.
A large part of this process is learning to take responsibility for yourself and your own actions and realizing that if you do not care about your own success enough to try for it, no one else is going to care enough to help you. Most successful leaders are individuals who are effective leaders of their own selves.
This is a difficult concept to grasp and a difficult skill to develop. Some people are naturally self-motivated. They want to succeed and achieve, even in no one is there to recognize that success or achievement. Other people are strictly motivated only by exterior appreciation and will rarely do something, even for their own advancement and benefit, if someone does not pat them on the back for it.
An executive coach is a great resource for both of these individuals. He can help an individual first, find his motivation. Becoming self-motivated is a process and what works one day may not work the next day. Second, he can make sure that the individual has an outlet to receive the kind of appreciation that he needs in order to be willing to keep working and progressing. Leading the self is an endurance run—not a sprint. Learning to influence yourself to do the things that you need and even want to do, but just do not have the motivation for, does not have to be impossible, however.
Becoming a person who observes himself, is able to set and achieve regular goals, and rewards himself reasonably will mean a more productive and effective life in the long-term.

    A great article with many valid points. To be a good leader in the coaching sense a coach has to motivate and transform a client to become empowered to understand what is holding them back from being the best they can be. This changes when the layers of blocking beliefs which holds one back are removed as these can be very subtle that the client is not aware of these negative beliefs, as it lies in the subconscious part of the thinking process. The objective is to put the client into a position that they are transformed to be a person who takes responsibility to seek out the many ways to continue their improvement because they want to be master of their minds and not have their minds master them!
