Breathwork is an umbrella term for a variety of safe, therapeutic breathing practices.

Typically, the practitioner starts the session talking with the client about their personal history and current issues. The client then lies down, relaxes, and focuses their awareness on their breath. The practitioner guides the client into a connected breathing rhythm. The breathing sessions last approximately an hour and the intensity of the breathing can vary from gentle to vigorous, depending on the client, the session, and the practitioner. The overall experience can vary widely from a powerful somatic therapy to a simple relaxation technique. After the active breathing part of the session, the client usually goes into a short period of integration, and continues to relax, breath and rest for a while.
