Why Personal Change is Important for a Conscious Leader

Here at the-Coaching Blog-run by Gerard O’Donovan, our aim is to constantly bring value to those seeking to improve their lives. Therefore we have a policy of publishing articles and materials by guest authors whom we value and appreciate. Today’s guest author is Floyd Carlson (USA).
The shift that is driving leaders to become more impactful is that we all desire more consciousness and connection in our lives, and especially from our leaders. We are yearning to feel inspired but are often surrounded by poor examples of leadership. We see everything from leaders leaving a legacy of long-lasting emotional scars too many leaders being average at best and being unmemorable. When I ask the question, what percentage of the leaders in your career, would you want to work for again, I get less than 27%.
The leaders that are most memorable are the ones who care more about their people’s success than his or her own. They check their ego at the door and wake up every morning thinking about what they can do today for the best of their team and people. Conscious leading is taking consistent actions that make a positive difference for your people, family, friends, community, organizations, and environment while making the world a better place to live. A conscious leader is everyone who makes the decision to be one, believes in their heart they are a leader and takes the steps to live and be an example for the world to follow. Being a conscious leader is an on-going personal journey of awareness of your default behaviors and the impact they have on others.
Personal change is the critical component to drive the transformation to be more conscious. The model becomes aware, make changes and see if those changes make the difference you want in your life. If not, take different actions until you get the results you want. This requires a desire to continue to do the internal work to be the best they can be.  To be able to transform and make an impact on other people, leaders must be willing to take the actions to change themselves and invest in their own development. Being free from their blocks, judgment, fears and limiting beliefs is an on-going process. Taking the action to be committed to doing the work builds confidence and provides first-hand stories for the leader to help others see possible alternatives.
A great first step in driving personal change is getting a coach. A coach will help the leader to become aware of their defaults, the impact these are having on others and assist in determining how best to overcome the items holding the person back. The payoff is the leader becomes an example for others of what personal change can achieve and they become conscious of their behaviors. This awareness allows them to decide is this how I want to be and what I want to be remembered for. They then are on their journey to becoming a conscious leader.

Prior to this position, he spent 15 years in Belgium working for Cisco Systems in various operations leadership roles for Cisco’s Europe, Middle East, Africa and Russia organization.
