Whether you are an independent thinker or have just had so many bad experiences collaborating with others in the past, some people have difficulty working with others. It may not be as overt as having real, physical confrontations with your coworkers, but you may simply not communicate as well as you should, or perhaps you are not excellent at delegating tasks and find yourself overwhelmed, when you could be asking for help.
Perhaps you just take your share of the work to your own little space and work on it, without really communicating what you’re doing to the rest of the group. All of these are signs that you could perhaps learn to work better with others. This is one area of personal development that many people work on throughout their careers. Here’s a crash course:
1. Learn to communicate. Sound simple enough, right? Probably not, but here are the basics. Learning to be a more effective communicator is all about figuring out how others communicate and talking to them on their level. If someone in the group doesn’t like to speak in front of everyone, they might still have great ideas that the group is currently missing out on. If you don’t like to speak in a group, consider sending out an email beforehand or afterward with your ideas, so you still get to have input.
On the other hand, you might dominate the discussion. Do you speak more than anyone else? Do you find yourself speaking over others? Try to reign yourself in and make sure everyone in the group has an equal voice.
2. Learn to collaborate. One of the biggest downfalls of projects that require collaboration is that each member of the team will take their piece, go off into their own corner, and work on it alone. While it is important to spread the work around, you still want the input of the other group members, especially to make sure that your part of the project meshes well with the rest of the project. Make sure that meeting time is used to check in on each other’s tasks and ensure they are progressing together.
3. Learn to offer constructive criticism without offense. Some people are going to take offense at your criticism, no matter how you phrase it. However, reasonable people will take constructive criticism gladly, as long as it phrased from a place of concern and genuine desire to help, and not simply to tear them down. One way to make sure that criticism is well received is to sandwich it in between praise.
4. Consider coaching. Coaching is a good way to get a jump start on this area of personal development. Brining a coach into the ring can help to smooth interpersonal problems and ensure that the entire group runs smoothly.
