Though the supervisor, employee relationship is imperative to ensuring that the business continues moving forward, there are many times where a lack of communication and misunderstandings can cause a break down in this necessary relationship. When this happens, many employees may begin to feel micromanaged or undermanaged. Neither of those two situations are conducive to getting work done. Why is the right kind of supervision important and how do you maintain a positive atmosphere in your workplace?
The right kind of supervision is important, as it encourages employees to both work with autonomy and feel as though they have a leader they can rely on if they need help or access to additional resources. Without proper supervision, many workers are perfectly capable of finishing their projects on time and under budget. These are the class of workers that will react badly to micromanagement. Others, of course, will see that they are given a large amount of autonomy and will discover that if they do not their work, there are not repercussions. These many respond better to micromanagement, but both the supervisor and the employees will get tired of being so closely watched every day, all the time.
This is where coaching can come in and help streamline and improve the management atmosphere. Even natural leaders sometimes need proper encouragement and guidance in order to hit their stride. Being a leader is about finding the right balance of supervision, so that employees do not feel like they are being micromanaged, but also so that they do not feel like they can get away with anything without repercussion.
The key to this is business and management coaching. A coach can help a manager achieve this difficult balance, understanding that the right level of management may vary from employee to employee, and that some work better under close supervision and others can manage themselves with a great deal of autonomy. This is done through a process of careful listening and learning, facilitated by a skilled coach.
