Here at the-Coaching Blog-run by Gerard O’Donovan, our aim is to constantly bring value to those seeking to improve their lives. Therefore we have a policy of publishing articles and materials by guest authors whom we value and appreciate. Today’s guest author is Gary R. Gasaway (USA).
Coaching is the essence of knowing the strengths of the individual and then identifying the limitations to improve that individual to be the best they can possibly be. Coaching is a co-creative partnership. There is no true authority figure – just the client and I working together for more joy and happiness in life. It’s truly inspiring the client to transform unwanted conflict to achieve positive solutions.
As a certified professional life coach, I see myself as a co-pilot. By guiding my client (the pilot), I am there by their side to coach them; but at the same time, hold them accountable as they are in charge of living (flying the plane) their life. Because the client is in charge of their life, they also direct their own destiny with me by their side.
For the client and me, it is a solid partnership that is held together by three important emotional connections: mutual trust, respect, and value. We must trust, create respect, and show value to one another. Through these three emotional connections we develop and grow – together.
The relationship between a coach and client is co-creative, meaning that we are equals and both have an active role. I am not a therapist, counsellor, or consultant. I am simply a trained and certified professional coach using honed communication skills to support the client as an attached thinking partner. Together we create synergy – resulting in meaningful change and taking dynamic actions towards the client’s goals.
The partnership component is a very important one for me and I want the client to use me as the resource and supporter that I am.  I am always just as enthusiastic and committed to my client’s goals as they are. My clients are smart, honest, and trustworthy people who want to invest in themselves to achieve a fulfilling and balanced lifestyle.
I find it key that at the end of each session if my client does not mention what actions they are ready to take, I will then make a coach request. I ask my clients to stretch themselves and deepen the work we complete in the coaching sessions by taking necessary actions to move forward in life. They are free to negotiate, accept, or decline. Ultimately they decide what is right for them and what they are willing to do, or not.  As I stated, their true future is the destiny they choose. I also make it very clear that we both have roles to create success in our partnership:
The Roles of Coach and Client
The relationship between coach and client is one of co-creation and mutual accountability. Our coaching sessions are always about the issues the client wants to discuss.  I will listen, reflect, ask questions, give my perspectives, and offer multiple options. I will support, believe in, and celebrate successes with my client.
As a professional coach, I am a person of high integrity and will keep all client conversations and correspondences confidential. As a coach, I will discuss what I believe is best, based on what the client communicates to me, but will always lean towards the potential I see in them.  Ultimately, I believe that my client is the only one who knows what direction is best for them and I will not try to manipulate or influence them to do anything they do not want to do.
As my client, I ask them to attend our coaching sessions fully prepared: focused on their own agenda of issues/concerns; ready to discuss meaningful matters of what their challenges might be; committed to being honest and open; accepting of accountability; prepared to step outside their comfort zones and stretching themselves; and be willing to find success in those efforts. Not just attached to outcomes, but their own individual extra efforts. To further explain, I then discuss what we can accomplish together:
Together, in our co-creative partnership, we will:

• Identify your goals
• Identify the barriers to obtaining those goals
• Find solutions to the barriers
• Find reasons to believe in yourself and how you will succeed
• Celebrate your efforts and accomplishments along the way

Additional benefits: My coaching will promote vast shifts in overall thinking and feeling abilities. This then creates a forward movement towards your goals for a more satisfying and happy life.
My coaching is a support system that provides you:

Lastly, I share that I am living proof that if the client has goals to focus on, and believes that they will succeed, they will then see it through. I assure them that I will fully support them as they continue to discover what those goals and successes are in our co-creative partnership.

Certified Professional Life Coach, Coach Training Alliance (CTA), accredited with the International Coach Federation (ICF). As a retired manager from the Southern California Edison Company, Gary used his natural talent for coaching and became a “corporate coach.” During his over 31 years with the company, he designed and developed several coaching courses and workshops that he facilitated to hundreds of supervisors and managers throughout the company.
