Let’s face it. When we are out in public communicating with others, we have to show signs of high social intelligence. If we don’t, it shows that we have poor social skills. In today’s world with technology limiting our face to face communication skills, it is important than ever to make sure that you develop these skills and are good at them. Every company you work for will require you to have decent social skills. Then again, humans are social animals. It is how he has evolved for thousands and thousands of years. No matter where your social intelligence lies today, it can always be improved. In this article, I am going to be breaking down three ways you can improve it.
1. Empathy
One of the biggest things that make up social intelligence is knowing the people around you and the emotions or feelings that they are currently having. In other words, you are being empathetic towards the other person. You know that feeling when another person just seems to connect with you right off the bat? Part of this may have to do with empathy. All in all, be aware of people’s emotional states when you are in a given environment. This will not only make them like you but it will end up building a better relationship. If someone acknowledges that they are happy, add to their happiness by being funny or giving them a compliment. In the end, this all goes a long way.
2. Smiling
Smiling is a universal facial expression that everyone knows. If you look at every culture in the world, they will all do one thing when they are happy: smile. Even if you pay attention to animals like dogs, chimps, and cats, they will smile when they are happy. Smiling doesn’t just affect our body on the outside but on the inside too. When you smile, your brain releases “feel-good” hormones in the brain that ultimately leave you and everyone around you in a positive mood. The good thing with smiling is it opens you up for social interaction. On the contrary, keeping your arms crossed and refusing to smile closes you up to these social interactions. At the end of the day, smiling puts you in a relaxed state and sends a friendly signal to everyone around you. To me, that’s what you call a win-win scenario.
3. Mirroring
If you have ever paid attention to a social interaction before, you may have noticed how both people in that interaction have acted the same. If one person is tense, the other person in too. If one person is sitting back and relaxing while having a good conversation, the other person is also. This social phenomenon is called mirroring and it is very important. By doing this, you are making people feel welcomed by acting more like them. Watch the body language of the person you are talking to or anyone in your given environment to help get better at this. The good news is that mirroring is basically a hardwired skill in our brain so it really doesn’t take much to get used to. Focus on talking about things that the other person likes and you will be liked more.
