We all grew up in a competitive world. In our childhood years, we were taught and told to work hard, do our best, achieve our goals and succeed. Yes of course, that is undeniably important in life. However, it seems though that they forgot to teach us one simple truth —that no great success was ever achieved without failure.

Many of us cringe when we think of failure. What if I lose that job position to someone better? What if my business goes bankrupt? What if my marriage won’t work? These kind of thoughts haunt us every time we do something and all we ever wanted is to ensure success. Sometimes we try and shut these kind of thoughts from our minds and continue living our lives. But what happens when failure has become a reality? Can we actually run from it?

Failure comes in many forms and its effect to each one of us is not the same. But for the unprepared, failure breaks the soul. We then ask ourselves, “Why did I fail when I have put all my heart and soul into this? Surely, there is something else I could have done”.

But most of the time, there isn’t. Failure is completely normal. It does not happen all the time but it still happens. At one point in time, it happened (or maybe could happen) to you, it happened to me, it happened to Steve Jobs, it happened to most of us.

That being said, when failure happens right before our very own eyes, there is no other way other than to accept it – deal with it -and move on. It is not easy though but it is the only way to survive the fall. Here are some tips that make life a tad lighter right after we experience failure.

  1. Accept what happened – There are things outside of our control. Accepting that truth is the first step to make accepting failure a breeze.
  2. Put some space between you and the situation – Relax. Breathe for a moment. And when you’re ready…
  3. Pick yourself up and face the situation – Revisit the things you’ve done before the failure. Know the good and the bad. It’s easy to build up on regrets on this part but be strong and think of what happened as a valuable lesson. Positive thoughts nurture positive outcomes.
  4. Talk about the situation to someone you trust – You’ve got a friend. They’ve had their share of failures too. Pick the ones with a positive outlook in life. You might learn from each other along the way.
  5. Get ready for the next fight – Life does not end in one failure. As mentioned earlier in this article, no great success was ever achieved without failure. The great successes of today did not happen overnight – it took years and years and a lot of failures in between.

Now that you’ve had your share of failure, never ever forget to learn from it. What makes life beautiful is that it always opens up endless possibilities even after we hit rock bottom.

Always remember that failure is a reality for all of us. We can learn from it, we can grow up from it. And like the old saying goes, we need to die a little in order to rise.
