People like me who knew nothing about football always thought that it is 22 people running to score a goal in the net of the opposition and all fighting for the same ball, and me coming from the corporate world I could see that happening, sometimes where some companies focus on the same market and on how to score points on each other, instead of understanding their teams and their target market.
Well, my perception after watching a couple of games turned to be totally a misconception of football, no it is not about different people running, and not about the coach fighting to hire the best talent available, it is not about a star player and it is a lot about Teamwork, Positive mindset, Goal Setting and Leadership
Teamwork: The first thing that stood out for me was Teamwork and the flow and agility of the team in a football team, understanding your strengths as a player as well as the position of each of your teammates and their strength is mandatory. Trusting that the whole team is playing to the benefit to the whole and any player at any position is as important as the goalkeeper. Some are fast, others are good scorers, few are agile, others strong on defense line, others on the attack and so on, and taking the time to really understand the unique abilities of each and how this adds up to the whole value of the team is crucial for success
Selfless leadership, trust, and teamwork are crucial in the corporate world and if team members focus on the strengths of each other and the vision of the company and let go of the blame game and keep their eyes on the goal then they are on the road to success. Teamwork is never about the leader and the self, it is about the team culture of understanding and embracing the uniqueness of each member.
This brings me to my second point which is Goal setting: Can you imagine a football match without the goals? Not doable and useless I guess. Without the goals, the whole purpose of the match is completely diluted. Without goals, your life lacks purposeful direction – or at the very least it is extremely mitigated. if you don’t know where you are heading as a company you will head nowhere and this applies to the teams as well, they need to have a clear goal that is in line with their self-development goal to look up to and achieve.. Goals help teams grow and improve.
The Power of Positivity is a subject dear to my heart: Some games go the wrong way and when this happens, the great coaches give the players a pat on the back rather than shouting at them, even if they are loosing. At the hardest times of the game, they never look at the scoreboard or focus who is to blame rather on how positively they can amend the plan and succeed. They all shift gear to cheerleading and positive mindset takes charge that we can do it.
Building a positive Culture in companies, encourage your employees to succeed. A positive culture does not mean, problems won’t happen, it means when they happen, we will not blame people rather focus on the solution and the learnings, keep your team informed of the lows and that the company is persevering and will keep moving forward, this is a game changer.
In a nutshell, learning never stops and in the last world cup, someone said that Germany had a team and Brazil had Neymar, totally true because relying too much on star players to make a team win is not sustainable, and is never enough. It is about consistently working with the whole team on a clearly communicated vision, building on the strengths and empowering each member by a positive culture that builds strong leaders.
