There has been a lot of buzz in the media lately about the rising generation, as the first wave graduates from university and starts looking for a career. The “Millennials,” as they’re being called, are lauded as one of the laziest, most self-centered generations to date. Having been raised on (and sometimes by) the internet, they are widely regarded in the job market as “non-starters.”

Many companies are writing them off and sticking with known talent, instead of branching out. The facts are, however, that almost every company in the world is going to hire at least one ?or more of these workers. Some have already seen the generation gap, the separation between the long-standing workers, and those who are freshly hired. There is widespread concern that this new generation cannot cope with the fast-paced and demanding environment of a corporate office.

This is where executive coaching comes in. The problem isn’t that the rising generation doesn’t want to work as hard or as efficiently as their progenitors, they simply require a different kind of motivation[1]. The world needs coaching now more than ever, as we transition from one type of worker to another. There will inevitably be a breakdown of communication, issues with job performance, and conflicts within the organization[2].

All of these are problems that executive coaches are trained to handle. Instead of hoping that issues work themselves out, or that Millennials simply adapt to the new environment, bringing in a coach to solve problems before they even occur, makes the transition much smoother. They can help the organization understand the shifting paradigm, while training new employees to communicate, adhere to the schedule, and work within the structure.

Of course, Millennials are not the only workers who may benefit from coaching. Across the world, companies have hired individuals that looked great on paper, and may even interview well, but once installed in a position, do not bring the necessary results. Before firing this individual, bring in an executive coach to evaluate the disconnect between expectations and result. Sometimes an individual is simply not a good fit, and other times, they are simply lacking the understanding of their role in the company.

Executive coaches help employees understand their place in the big picture of the company. This gives the individual purpose, and helps them work more efficiently. Coaches can also mediate in interpersonal disputes, help a business restructure, and even help groom an employee for leadership. The world needs coaching because it helps companies become more efficient, and therefore, more profitable. It reduces employee turnover and eliminates the communication problems that so often spell destruction for major projects. With less time wasted and happier employees, companies across the globe can see their profits increase.
